Hard to find books in Malaysia?

Last two days I spent a whole day to find a book recommended by my lecturer as a supplement of the book I used now. I went to three different universities UKM, UM and UIA, university’s bookstores and MPH but I went back frustrated and felt like wasting my day. Just imagine I travelled from Bangi to Gombak and went back empty handed.

My last stop was to MPH bookstore in Mid Valley. While searching for the book I met with a Spanish guy who is a lecturer in Faculty of Economics, UM. He was also looking for Economics books. Then suddenly he said to me it is really hard to find books in Malaysia. I just smile without nodded what he said. If I told him my experience on that day definitely he would complaint more. He was interested in what I was looking for and I found out that he got the expertise in my area of research. We did some talking and he asked me why didn’t I do my Phd in UM since there are few lecturers can be my potential supervisors (including him lah). I have no answer for that since I just follow my heart and make my decision to UKM. Yes, I must admit UM has few lecturers in my area of interest so I took the opportunity of asking for his card, who knows some day I might need his help in my research.

Both of us couldn’t find the books we want. On the way back, I was thinking, why is so difficult to find a book in Malaysia especially the higher level books? Is it because …

  1. There is less demand for the original books but higher demand for photo copy books so the bookstore get less profit and as a result they are not willing to sell it.
  2. The books are not published anymore, the last version was 1978
  3. It is rarely found because the lecturer has his own school of thought following his previous lecturer’s school of thought when he studied oversea many2 years ago, so he uses one and only one book as his ‘kitab’. As a result you have no chance to deviate from his school of thought and his kitab and you really need to find that kitab even though it is not sold in Malaysia
  4. Highly demand for the books, the students hide it somewhere in the library or borrow from the library and never attempt to return it
  5. None of the above.

Again, I have no answer for this question. You make your own choice lah.

Assalamua'laikum, Dear Azuriy,

Your day that day to me was not been wasted. It was only you did not bring the book that you are looking for, however, you met a lecturer who can make you have contact in the UM economics school.
For studying in the UKM or UM, for your case, it does not make any difference since, you are already got a place to work. What you are now doing (without noticing) is creating your own academic network. You could propose to your supv for you to have an external supv from UM. I believe, for the sake of knowledge broadening, your lecturer might not have problem with that.
Another places that you could try to find the book is may be at Bank Negara's library (I think they should have a library) and UiTM library. Let also try another big book store like Kinokuniya in KLCC, Or you may be can find the book by browsing through internet and try to order from internet as well. Why don't you also try asking information from the lecturer who recommended the book? Get the supplier's address and ask them to buy. I guess you did that already, right?!
Okay..to the question why it is very difficult to find high level reference books in Malaysia,..hmmmm...I guess I would select all the reasons you mentioned.
..another idea! (it just crossed in my head),..if you hear any of your friends or relative going oversea for short period, ask their favor to find the book there. (It is not creating difficulties to others, it is just make use of opportunity crossing infront of us).
Well Azuriy, the harder the life is going, the more benefits is waiting as long as we are always be patient and yaqin of the promise. Remember to refer to and always recite suroh Al-Inshiroh. One thing that you should always do; keep smiling. I-lal-li-qa' wassalamah.

Dear Azuriy, assalamua'laikum,

..Somethings for you as motivation,

-Don’t Quit -
*When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
*When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,
*Keep your spirits high for through thick and thin,
*You must carry on if you are to win.

*Life is strange with its twists and turns,
*As everyone of us sometimes learns.
*It challenges us to often give up,
when we could have captured the victor’s cup.

*So turn your failures inside out,
*Press them on past fear and doubt.
*Never mind if things hold you back a bit,
*You’ll come out on top,
but you mustn’t quit.

Have a nice day, wassalam.

Azuriy,
Your option of C is interesting as I have gone through that experience before. My lecturer mentioned "Don't you dare to deviate from my books". I don't know whether he said it seriously or jokingly. Whatever it is, just follow whatever said by your lecturer/supervisor. No harm on that and believe they know the best unless you got a lecturer who gives you a wrong direction.

I think you should open your own blog coz you write/advice more than Azuriy wrote in her blog. I think a motivation blog is a good idea if it suits you. Just my 2cent opinion.
