Tudung & Malaikat

I was reading and overheard somebody happily said "I will only wear tudung if I go back to Malaysia but not in Australia". Her words automatically had made the evil thought came straight to my head and saying "kat Malaysia je ke ada malaikat, kat Australia takde kot'( Ya Allah, I beseech your forgiveness for saying this in my heart to this person whom I didn't even know her)

It reminds me the story of me & my ex students. Due to the lack of the class available during day time, I did a replacement class at night from 8.00 to 10.00p.m. When I entered the class I felt something wrong somewhere where and a lot of unfamiliar faces in my class.Half of the female students didn't wear tudung and as far as I could remember only few students didn't wear it in the class. I thought I was in the wrong class and asked them to confirm it. The students said it was my class so I asked again why there were unfamiliar faces and I hardly recognized them. The guys definitely gave a very straight answer "ramai tak pakai tudung malam ni". It gave me a chance to reply " apasal, malam takde malaikat siang je ada". You can expect the action from the guys they were laughing like they never did anything wrong in my class and the girls of course could only gave sour smiles.

I didn't mean to be sarcastic far from trying to humiliate anyone but I know I have the obligation to educate them and not just to teach them. I hate nagging to others and been nagged by others so if I gave a ceramah about pahala & dosa or syurga & neraka after seeing my female students were not in the proper attire definitely they wouldn't listen to me or just ignore everything. What I could do was saying only a short and simple remarks and hopefully it was effective. Whether the students understood what I meant or not, my intention at that time was really sincere. I'm not saying I'm good, far from perfect enough to give admonition/advice in this matter but I believed the students and myself too should be reminded when we did something wrong.

Note : The entry doesn't mean to condemn anyone. It just my experience as an educator and a muslim woman who tried to educate the students. If the way of educating my students and writing it here didn't seem right I accept it solely as my own weakness

Dear Azuriy, Assalamua'laikum,

You did the right thing Sis. Yes, there are so many lecturer out there, but very very few of them are real educator. One of the real educator is seems you. Keep it up Sis.

No one should condemn to what you said to your student at that particular of time. They seem have understood Islam wrongly in that sense. What came out from your mouth was something honest from deep of your heart and spontaneously said due to defending of our religion (way of life). Some claim that (in their own without knowledge 'tafsir'); ...Tiada paksaan dalam agama.(then they just stop there). Actually, the meaning is, Islam only ask us to 'dakwah' other nonmuslims and cannot push them to accept Islam. However, when we already in Islam, we are obliged to learn, to know and to study the 'hukum', regulation and law of Islam. Those who not really understand, need to be reminded (as how you did).

Well Sis, also don't worry about whether could you able to continuously giving them a good example or not. I agreed, the responsibility as a muslim educator is very big. Just recite and zikr; La-hau-la-wa-la Quw-wa-ta-il-la-bil-la-hil-a'zim. Let us only ask Allah to help.

Wallahua'lam. Keep smiling Sis. I-lal-li-qa' was-sa-la-mah

Dear Azuriy, Assalamua'laikum,

I just like to highlight my opinion, hope the point could be discussed further among your "educator" group. If it is acceptable, hope it could contribute in "memperkasakan" /strengthening the characteristic of an "educator".

I think, an educator who works formally in the educational industry, should (at some stages it can become a must)have a 'teacher-student gap'. Of course there are pros and cons. But with the condition nowadays in many educational institutions, the 'gap' is found required in order for the feeling or thinking of showing/giving respect to teachers can be appeared clearly from the students again. The students must be thought and trained the 'adab' on how to communicate or deal with teachers. On the teachers's side, avoid having any scandals, 'bercinta', make student as 'adik angkat', etc. that can make the 'gap' deteriorate (even to their ex-students). The respect shall be shown by the student's parents as well. The respect should be continuously received by the teachers from the students and their parents even after the students have finished their study.

The burden of an educator is quite tough nowadays and the situation dealing with is really challenging. If the students cooperate, it will strengthen the 'gap'. If they don't, but with the 'gap' is there, it still can defend the teachers. Sooner or later, the respect still can be gained/obtained even after the students are no longer there. (normally students will take time to realize this..ha 3x).

To me, teachers (I mean educators)shall throw away the feeling of 'rendah diri' to their ex-students who have better life than theirs or become more knowledgeable. Just keep the 'gap' when they meet you, and you are ensured to still receive the respect.

My opinion Sis, in order for the educators to make the 'gap' alive in them, they have to make sure that they are always more Islamic knowledgeable than their students, ex-students, children, younger relatives and followers. And the most important thing is, do the same to our teachers and ex-teachers first.

Wallahua'lam. Continue your good service and effort Sis. Keep smiling. Ketahuilah, kerja mengajar ilmu dan mendidik adalah semulia2 pekerjaan disisi agama Islam. I-lal-li-qa' was-sa-la-mah.
